Penywaun’s Great Estate Day

21 March 2025

On Thursday 06 March, the community of Penywaun, along with teams from Trivallis and RCT Council, came together to make a positive impact on the area for a Great Estate Day.

On Thursday 06 March, the community of Penywaun, along with teams from Trivallis and RCT Council, came together to make a positive impact on the area for a Great Estate Day.

From cutting back overgrown areas, litter picking and having conversations about what matters most to people, the day was a great example of what can be achieved when everyone works together with a shared goal.

Hwb Cana served as a meeting point for the day’s activities, and to mark their launch as a Community Litter Picking Hub with Keep Wales Tidy, it provided the perfect location for local schoolchildren and residents to join in a litter pick to mark the occasion. Together, they collected several bags of litter from the streets, community centre grounds, park, and playing fields.

Gemma Conway, Development Officer at Coalfields Regeneration Trust expressed:

“It was a fantastic opportunity for Hwb Cana to collaborate with Trivallis during their Great Estate Day in Penywaun, to launch our Community Litter Picking Hub in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy and the Tenants and Residents Association (TRA).

“A big thank you to Ted from the TRA for linking in with Penywaun Primary School and involving the children. The turnout was incredible, with 68 volunteers helping to collect 47 bags of rubbish and recycling.

“We’re thrilled to now have our own equipment available for the community to use whenever they need it!”

Hywel Tanner-Jones, Rhondda Cynon Taf Project Officer at Keep Wales Tidy explained:

“Our Litter Picking Hubs are designed to make life as easy as possible for anyone looking to keep their community clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. This one is particularly special because of all the partners involved in making it happen.

“It was fantastic to launch the Hub at the Great Estate Day with such a successful clean-up of the area. I can’t wait to see other litter heroes in and around Penywaun making use of the equipment.

You can find your nearest Hub by visiting the Keep Wales Tidy website: www.keepwalestidy.cymru/litter-picking-hubs.”

Miss Jones from Penywaun Primary School said:

“It was a fantastic morning, very inclusive and productive, and made a massive difference to the estate.”

Residents also took the opportunity to speak with Trivallis teams about what they enjoy about living in Penywaun and what improvements they would like to action in the area. Local PCSOs were also present to engage with residents and discuss matters concerning the estate.

Penywaun Community Centre also opened its doors to welcome everyone in to take a well-earned break after their hard work and offer refreshments.

On the day, the middle section of Penywaun was the focus with plans to return to visit the other areas. This day was just one part of the ongoing efforts to make Penywaun an even greater place to live.
