A group of tenants living in Swn Yr Afon Sheltered Scheme have come together to recycle plastic bottles to turn them into poppies to commemorate Remembrance Day.

The tenants living at the scheme regularly get involved with coffee mornings, and social activities but crafts weren’t something they often did. But when Senior Scheme Coordinator Carol took inspiration from other Remembrance displays, she suggested the idea of crafting a display but through repurposing recycled items.

Around 300 plastic bottles were collected, cut up and painted by the group to create the poppies for the display. With holes punched and secured with wires, the display took shape.

Carol explained: “Mike, one of the tenants living here, and I were the technical team. After a few attempts at positioning the display, making sure it was right, we managed to secure it to the fence.”

Different members of the group took on different responsibilities with some helping to paint, others constructed the display, and they even brought in some extra help from their friends.

Rose, a tenant involved in the project said: “We had a good laugh. It was a great bit of fun. There was paint everywhere, even in my hair!”

Overall, it took around three weeks to complete. From gathering the bottles, to putting up the display just in time for Remembrance Day.

A tenant living in Library Court Sheltered Scheme, kindly crafted two soldier silhouettes to accompany the poppy display.

The display has found pride of place on either side of the gates of Swn Yr Afon.

Debra, a tenant at the scheme said: “It’s nice to do a project like this, as everyone is touched by war in some way. It’s nice to honour it.”

The group will be adding to the display next year, with plans to make it bigger and better for years to come.

With their newfound love of crafting, they are starting to plan some Christmas craft sessions to keep them busy in the winter months.

The group consisted of Olga Roberts, Helen Davies, Rose Thomas, Debra Jones, Doreen Tucker, Elizabeth Hammond, Mike Worgan, Kay Barrow, and Debra Jones friends and family that joined in unexpectedly!
