Button Factory Development given the go ahead

6 March 2024

Our plans for the Button Factory site in Porth have been approved by RCT planning

Our plans for the Button Factory site in Porth have been approved by RCT planning, meaning we can now turn this unused land into much needed social housing.

The historic Button Factory provided jobs and a sense of community for past generations in the area. Now, thanks to the support of our partners, we can transform this abandoned site into sustainable, safe and welcoming homes for current and future generations.

The redevelopment of the site will deliver 10 new energy efficient homes that will cost tenants less to keep warm, while also helping them produce less carbon emissions. The site will include 4 x 1 bedroom walk up flats, 6 x 2-bedroom houses.

As with other recent development plans, the mix of flats and houses are a response to the changing demand for social housing in RCT.

With the cost of living and rising prices in the private rental market, we’re seeing people from all walks of life applying for social housing. With that increase there are also very different circumstances and needs that we have to try and meet along with other partners in the area. This means the homes we develop must be equally as diverse to cater to the increasing demand, while prioritising those with the most urgent need.

“This development is another great example of us being able to work with partners to identify land that offers the greatest potential for  meeting local housing needs while getting us closer to our housing target. We have an ambitious new development plan that will increase the availability of social housing while building a brighter future for our communities.

“In our initial conversation with residents we were able to reassure them that the development wouldn’t worsen existing parking issues and would in fact improve the view of direct neighbours who currently look out over an abandoned site that once meant so much to the community.

“Through redevelopment the site can once again serve the community and provide a much needed safe place in which people can live well.”
