Plans to bring new life to the former Merthyr General Hospital site

14 July 2026

We’ve recently bought the former Merthyr General Hospital site and will be submitting a planning application to demolish the current building and redevelop it into new homes for local people.

This is a site that many people in Merthyr know well and care about. It’s been part of the town’s story for generations, and we understand how important it is to the community. That’s why this hasn’t been a quick or easy decision.

The reality is that the building has been empty for many years and its condition has continued to get worse. It is now structurally unsafe and has become increasingly affected by vandalism, trespassing and anti‑social behaviour. This has been a growing concern for local residents and for us too.

After carefully looking at all the options, we believe that demolition is the safest and most practical way forward. It will allow us to deal with the current risks and, importantly, bring the site back into positive use.

Our proposal is to create a high‑quality development of homes that meet local need. Like many areas, Merthyr continues to see strong demand for good housing. This project is an opportunity to help meet that need while improving a prominent site in the town.

We want to create homes that people feel proud to live in, homes that are well designed, energy efficient and part of a safe, welcoming neighbourhood. We will work closely with partners and the local authority to make sure the development fits well with the surrounding area and adds real value to the community.

We know that not everyone will agree with these plans, and we respect that. Buildings like this often hold strong memories and connections for people. While it isn’t possible to save the structure itself, we are committed to being sensitive to the history of the site as we move forward.

We also want to hear from you. As part of the planning process, there will be opportunities for residents and stakeholders to share their views. Your feedback is important and will help shape the future of the site.

Once the planning application is submitted, you will be able to view it and find out more details through the local authority’s planning portal.

This is about making the site safe again and creating something positive for the future – new homes, new opportunities, and a fresh start for a well‑known part of Merthyr.

We’ll keep the community updated as plans progress.
