Belonging starts at home

15 June 2026

For most of us, belonging is something we rarely stop to think about. It's the feeling of being accepted, respected and valued for who you are. It's feeling safe enough to be yourself. It's knowing that your voice matters.

Belonging Starts at Home

What does it mean to belong?

For most of us, belonging is something we rarely stop to think about. It’s the feeling of being accepted, respected and valued for who you are. It’s feeling safe enough to be yourself. It’s knowing that your voice matters.

But belonging isn’t something everyone experiences equally.

For some people, barriers related to disability, race, ethnicity, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, caring responsibilities or other aspects of their identity can affect how welcome and included they feel in everyday life.

That’s why we’re launching Belonging Starts at Home.

This campaign is about understanding what belonging means to the people who live in our homes and communities, and working together to create places where everyone feels they belong.

Why home matters

Home is more than four walls and a roof.

It’s where we build our lives, connect with our neighbours, raise families, recover from challenges and look to the future.

When people feel they belong at home, they are more likely to feel connected to their community, confident in accessing opportunities and able to thrive.

But belonging doesn’t happen by accident.

It is shaped by the environments we create, the services we provide, the conversations we have and the way we treat one another.

That’s why we want to listen, learn and take action.

Listening to lived experiences

Over the coming months, we’ll be exploring what belonging means through a range of themes and awareness campaigns, including Pride Month, Disability Pride Month, Black History Month and others throughout the year.

Most importantly, we want to hear directly from the people who live and work in our communities.

We know that lived experience provides insights that data alone cannot.

We want to understand what’s working well, where people face barriers, and what changes would make the biggest difference.

Whether you’ve had positive experiences to share, challenges you’ve faced or ideas for improvement, your perspective can help shape the future of this work.

Help us shape what comes next

Belonging Starts at Home is not a campaign we want to create for people.

It’s something we want to build with people.

We’re looking for tenants, residents, community members and colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences to help inform and shape this work.

By listening to diverse voices, we can better understand the needs of our communities and create services, homes and places that work for everyone.

Because real belonging starts with listening.

And belonging starts at home.
