Create your own bird feeder

29 May 2025

With a few odds and ends from around the home, you can create a brilliant bird feeder—showing off your creativity, upcycling skills, and appreciation for your feathered neighbours.

Garden Wildlife Week is here, and no garden? No problem.

Whether you’ve got a balcony, a window ledge, or just a little patch of outdoor pride, you can still turn it into a birdie hotspot.

With a few odds and ends from around the home, you can create a brilliant bird feeder—showing off your creativity, upcycling skills, and appreciation for your feathered neighbours.

It’s easy, fun, and a great way for everyone to get involved, no matter the space.

You will need:

  • Empty tin can
  • Bird seed
  • Lollypop stick
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Here’s how to create:

  • Step 1: Remove any labels and glue from the tin, give it a wash and leave to dry. Be careful of any sharp edges on the tin.
  • Step 2: Place the lolly pop stick on the outside of the tin, leaving half of it hanging over to act as a perch, and secure with glue. Leave to dry.
  • Step 3: Lay the tin on its side and tie a piece of string around the centre of it. Make sure the string is left long enough to tie it up, outside.
  • Step 4: Find a spot to hang your bird feeder, tie it up and make sure it’s safe.
  • Step 5: Fill the bird feeder with bird seed and wait for the birds to pay you a visit.

If you want to get more creative, you can decorate the outside of your bird feeder with paint, pens or other craft materials. Just make sure they are weatherproof and safe for animals to be around.

Here’s a tutorial video to help you create your DIY bird feeder:
