Warm weather can be enjoyable, but homes can get hot very quickly. We’re sharing a few simple tips that may help you stay cooler and more comfortable at home.

Keep your home cool

Small changes can make a big difference.

  • Close blinds or curtains on windows that get direct sunlight.
  • Spend time in the coolest room in your home if you can. This can also help you sleep better at night.
  • Open windows when it is cooler outside than inside, such as in the evening or overnight, if it is safe to do so. Open windows on opposite sides of your home to help fresh air move through.
  • If you use an electric fan, it can help when the temperature is below 35°C.
  • Turn off lights and electrical items when you are not using them. They can make a room warmer.
  • If it is cooler outside, spend some time in the shade.

Drink plenty of water

Keeping hydrated is important in hot weather.

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • Take a refillable water bottle with you when you go out. Take extra water if you are making a longer journey.
  • Try to drink less alcohol and fewer drinks with lots of caffeine or sugar, as these can make it easier to become dehydrated.

Looking out for each other

Hot weather can affect people in different ways. Looking out for each other can make a real difference.

If you can, check in with a family member, friend or neighbour during very warm weather. A quick message, phone call or chat can help someone feel supported.

Never leave children or pets in a parked car or other closed space, even for a short time.

If you are worried about your health, or someone else’s, get medical advice.
