I just can’t sit still. I’ve got to be active, I’ve got to be doing stuff… I see something, I just think: I can help there.”

Meet Martin from Tonyrefail – a man who lives and breathes community spirit. In the latest episode of Tidy People, a podcast and vodcast series that celebrates everyday people making an extraordinary difference, Martin shares his passion for rebuilding the heart of his hometown.

Having returned to Tonyrefail 25 years ago after a few years away, Martin made it his mission to give back. From coaching the local women’s football team to supporting veterans through monthly breakfasts, his days are filled with meaningful action. He’s even helping to revive the Tonyrefail branch of the Royal British Legion.

“We had four people at the first veterans’ breakfast, and now we’re up to ten. There’s a good feeling that we can bring it all back.”

Martin reflects on how Tonyrefail once thrived with a strong, close-knit community — a place where everyone knew everyone, where doors were always open, and where local shops bustled with life. Though things have changed, he’s determined to restore that spirit.

“I don’t mean leaving our doors open again — I mean the simple things. Saying good morning. Being there for each other.”

He speaks candidly about the impact of the 1986 bypass, which diverted foot traffic and contributed to the decline of local businesses. But now, thanks to the work of the local Chamber of Trade and people like Martin, there’s hope. The high street is coming back to life, with only one shop left empty and even the long-abandoned Lloyds Bank due to get a facelift and a new sense of purpose.

Martin believes a thriving community starts with connection — whether it’s chatting in the Co-op or creating safe spaces like a youth café and skate park for the next generation. He longs for a return to community carnivals, football clubs, and shared traditions.

“There’s a lot of people who try hard, even if it goes unnoticed. If we give Ton its identity back — maybe not the coal mines, but the togetherness — then we’re on the right track.”
