Everything you need to know about the situation at Fanheulog sheltered housing scheme

On Tuesday 14 May 2024, we informed everyone living at Fanheulog of the need to permanently move them. Due to the poor condition and accessibility issues at Fanheulog, residents are being permanently relocated to new homes so that they can live somewhere more suitable for their needs.

  1. Why has Trivallis made this decision?

Over recent months, we have carried out some work at Fanheulog to make sure it is safe for everyone.

Even with the improvements for safety (installing and reviewing smoke detectors, relocating the scooter store, and carrying out fire stopping works), the building is not suitable for the people living there. Our team has done their best to maintain and modernise Fanheulog, but it has reached the point where the current building is not a good place to live, especially for older people.

This means that we would like to move all residents to new, permanent homes, which will be much more suitable for them. This decision wasn’t easy, but it’s for the long-term comfort and safety of people living in Fanheulog.

This decision only affects the sheltered scheme and not the rest of the street.

  1. Does the building have RAAC?

No, it doesn’t. Following the news about some Trivallis homes in Hirwaun, a few people have raised concerns about Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in the scheme. But, just to be clear, this is not an issue at Fanheulog.

  1. What does this mean for the tenants?

People living at Fanheulog will need to move out of their property permanently into a more suitable new home. Our staff are talking to individuals to find out where they would like to move to and what they need in their new home and community. When, and only when, something suitable becomes available, they will be offered this.

We will carefully consider the needs and preferences of every tenant to find the best long-term solution for people.

  1. Is Trivallis making people homeless or forcing them out?

Absolutely not. We are a responsible social landlord, owned by our tenants and regulated by Welsh Government. We are committed to looking after the people living at Fanheulog. Some residents have been there for many years and have strong relationships with our staff.

Residents will only move when they’ve been found a suitable alternative home to go to.

  1. What other support is available for residents?

Our staff will be working closely with tenants to minimise disruption and ensure they have access to the right support, including independent impartial advice and working with family, to help them find a better place to live.

  1. What are the future plans for Fanheulog?

The current priority is making sure the building is empty so we can safely consider what the future may hold for the site.

There are no plans at the moment. Any decisions about the site will be made following a full appraisal of all the options, discussion with the Local Authority, and proper consultation with the local community.

  1. There are lots of rumours about Fanheulog on social media. Are they true?

Some people commenting about Fanheulog on social media are simply spreading incorrect information and speculation. This is causing unnecessary stress and anxiety for the tenants living at Fanheulog and their families.

Our local team is working sympathetically and thoughtfully with all the residents and have their best interests at heart.
